Origin of Pizza

Pizza is one of America’s favorite foods. But where did pizza as a food originated from? Well history points to Italy as a birthplace for what we know as pizza today. Ancient cultures had basic flatbreads that they would put a few toppings on. Over time, they started adding more toppings and one of the most popular ones was tomatoes. With the addition of tomatoes and the continuity to have tomato as a base for their dish, pizza as we know it today was born.

Italian immigrants of the early 19th century brought with them their ideas and recipes for pizza. It didn’t take off completely until after World War II. American troops who were stationed in Italy fell in love with the dish and brought back their experiences with them. The pizza industry in the United States boomed. Today you can find pizza restaurants scattered all around the country.
